Instead of fusion, an artificial disc can be used to restore normal biomechanical function after disc removal so providing pain relief and helping to avoid subsequent degeneration at adjacent levels – Mobile-bearing technology is used to provide a more natural range of movement. A relatively new technique, it is thought to be of particular advantage in the younger patient with little or no degenerative change.
