Minimally Invasive Surgery
There is currently much interest in the use of 'spacers'  to provide flexible support of the lumbar spine in degenerative disease as an alternative to fusion. The principle is that they restore the natural height of the disc allowing the nerve roots to exit freely from the spinal cord while maintaining normal movement of the spine.

These relatively new devices are widely used throughout Europe, and at the Hermitage Clinic we are engaged in a prospective study of their use in selected patients with

§  Chronic low back pain due to isolated disc disease.

§  Second discectomy.

§  Discectomy of a transitional disc (sacralization of L5)

§  Stenosis of vertebral canal.

§  Massive disc herniation

§  Symptomatic degenerative disc disease at a level adjacent to fusion.
